A home hairdresser for older and housebound clients, at their pace.
Unhurried cuts, blow dries and colour in your own chair, or your mum's or dad's. Across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, from a Vidal Sassoon trained hairdresser with twenty years behind the chair.
When getting out is the hard part, the hair still matters.
A good number of my clients book me because leaving the house is the obstacle, not the hair. Older clients who no longer drive and would otherwise depend on somebody else's afternoon. People whose mobility makes a salon with a step at the door and a fixed basin a non-starter. People recovering from surgery. People who have simply found that a busy salon is more than they want to deal with any more.
For all of them, a home appointment is not a luxury version of a haircut. It is the only version that actually happens. And hair matters more, not less, when the rest of life has got harder. A proper cut and a blow dry in your own chair, with the kettle on and nobody in a hurry, does a lot more than tidy the ends.
My name is Biba. I have been doing hair for twenty years, I trained at Vidal Sassoon, and I spent years in senior and director roles in salons before setting up on my own with a home salon in Yelling, near St Neots, and a mobile service that covers Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Home visits for older clients are a large part of why I do this work at all. You can read more about me if you would like to know who is coming to the door.
If you found this page looking for a mobile hairdresser for the elderly, an OAP hairdresser near you or a hairdresser who will come to a housebound relative, this is the honest version of what I offer, what I need, and what I will not promise.
Booking for a parent, a neighbour or a friend.
- 01
Book it for them
On Fresha, choose the Home Visit version of the service, booked under your name if that is easier. Put their address in the notes. If Fresha feels like a faff, ring me instead.
- 02
Tell me about them
Anything that helps: hearing, mobility, the time of day they are at their best, whether you will be there, and who I should call if the door takes a while.
- 03
A chair and a sink
A firm chair near a plug socket and a sink I can rinse at. I do not bring a backwash or a hydraulic chair, so if the sink is a struggle, say so and we will plan round it.
- 04
Same time next time
If it went well, I can book the next one before I leave, so there is always a date in the diary and nobody has to remember to chase it.
You do not need to be there, but you are very welcome to be, and for a first appointment it often helps. If you live further away, put your own phone number in the booking notes as well as theirs, so I can reach you if the door takes a while or I have a question on the day.
A chair, a socket and a sink. That is the list.
A firm chair with a back is easier for both of us than a deep armchair, though if moving is difficult I will work around wherever is comfortable. It needs to be near a plug socket for the dryer, with a bit of floor space round it.
Then somewhere to wash. I do not carry a hydraulic chair or a portable backwash, and I would rather say that plainly than have anybody expecting a reclining basin. How we wash depends on the house, so we sort it out when you book: usually the kitchen sink, the bath or the shower. If leaning forward over a sink is uncomfortable or not advisable, tell me. A dry cut needs no washing at all, and we can talk about the gentlest way to do the rest.
I bring everything else: the dryer, the towels, a gown and a dustpan. The floor is swept before I leave. If the person I am visiting uses a wheelchair, tell me when you book and we will work out the easiest way to do it.
The appointments older clients ask for most.
- Dry cut
- Wash, cut and blow dry
- Wash, cut, style and blow dry
- Men's wash, cut and blow dry
- Standard blow dry
- Full head colour refresh
- Toner
- Perm
- Moroccanoil treatment
- Eyebrow shape or wax
- Lip or chin
Those are the ones I am asked for most often, and the whole services list is open to anybody who wants something else. A wash, cut and blow dry is about an hour. Colour needs a skin test at least 48 hours before the first appointment with me, which I can post or drop round, and perms need a proper look at the hair before we book one in.
A lot of people ask me about a shampoo and set. It is not a service I list, so I am not going to promise it here. If a set is what your mum has always had, ring me and we can talk about what I can do with her hair.
On cost: there is a £10 call-out charge on top of the service price, the same as for any home visit inside the usual area, and it is built into the Home Visit version of each service on Fresha. Prices for the services themselves live on Fresha where they stay accurate. I have written more about what a mobile hairdresser actually costs.
Nobody is waiting for the chair after you.
The best thing about a home visit for an older client is that there is no queue behind them. In a salon, the next person is already in the waiting area. At home, the appointment takes as long as it takes. If we need a cup of tea halfway through, or five minutes to stretch, or a pause while the phone is answered, that is fine. When you book, tell me if you think it will need extra time and I will plan the day so it gets it.
If hearing is an issue, tell me and I will make sure we talk face to face before I go behind the chair, so nothing comes as a surprise. I explain what I am doing before I do it. And I listen. A lot of my older clients have had their hair a particular way for years, and I am not there to talk them into something new unless they want it.
Recovering from an operation. If you have been told how to sit, how far to lean or when you can wash your hair, follow that and tell me what you were told. I will work around whatever is comfortable, and a dry cut avoids the sink altogether. I am a hairdresser, so if you are unsure whether it is too soon, ask the people looking after your recovery first.
Living with dementia. If you are booking for somebody living with dementia, tell me what helps. The time of day they are usually at their best. Whether they like to chat or prefer it quiet. Whether it helps for you to be in the room. Anything that tends to unsettle them. I am not a carer and I will not pretend to be, but I can go slowly, keep it short if that is kinder, and stop if it is not working that day. There is always another day.
Regular appointments. A lot of older clients like a standing arrangement: the same day, roughly the same time, every few weeks. I can book the next one before I leave, so there is always a date in the diary and nobody has to remember to chase it. It also means the same person does their hair every time and knows exactly how they like it, which matters more to some people than the haircut itself.
Ask me first.
If your parent lives in sheltered housing, a retirement flat or a care setting, ask me rather than booking straight in. Whether I can come depends on the place, what they allow, and whether there is a sink and a socket I can use, and those answers are different everywhere. I would rather talk it through with you on the phone than make a promise on a web page.
Give me a ring on 07960 632388 or send me a message with the details and I will tell you honestly whether it works.
How it feels to sit in my chair.

I had a great experience, I decided I wanted a fringe with some layers in a new style to what I previously had. The atmosphere was relaxing and I felt at ease and in good hands the whole time. My end style was lovely and I was really happy with it.

I've been a client of Biba for a number of years. She always listens to what you would like and gives great advice on what can be achieved, she has such a cheerful personality, I feel very at ease with her, I consider her a friend & trust that my hair will look great - she's never let me down!

Biba has been doing my hair for over 10 years along with my sister, sister-in-law, niece and daughters. We have always been extremely pleased with Biba's cuts, colours, and blow drys. We all highly recommend her.

These are from the same Google, Facebook and Fresha reviews as the rest of the site. None of them say how old the client is or where they live, so I am not presenting them as anything other than what they are: people describing what it is like to have their hair done by me, some of them for many years. The full set is on the reviews page.
Across both counties, from Yelling out.
I cover Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, anywhere within roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Yelling. Closest to home that means St Neots and the villages round it, and Cambourne and Papworth Everard. A little further, Huntingdon and Godmanchester, St Ives, Cambridge and Bedford, and at the outer edge Sandy and Biggleswade.
If you are a little further out, ask. For a regular appointment I would much rather find a way to make it work than have you not bother asking. The wider picture of how home visits work is on the mobile hairdressing page, and I have written about why clients make the switch to mobile and exactly what happens on a first home visit.
If your mum or dad can manage a short car journey and would enjoy an outing, the home salon at 10 High Street, Yelling, PE19 6SD has parking right outside and they would be the only client in the room. Some people prefer that. Most, on this page, will prefer that I come to them, and that is exactly what the mobile service is for.
What families ask before they book.
Can I book a home hairdresser for my mum or dad?
Yes. Book the Home Visit version of the service on Fresha in your own name if that is easier, put their address in the notes and tell me anything that will help. If you would rather talk it through first, ring me.
What do you need in the house?
A firm chair near a plug socket and a bit of floor space. Washing depends on the house: I do not carry a portable backwash or a hydraulic chair, so we work out the easiest option when you book, usually the kitchen sink, the bath or the shower. If leaning over a sink is difficult, tell me. A dry cut needs no washing at all.
Do you do a shampoo and set?
It is not a service I list, so I am not going to promise it on a web page. What I do list is a dry cut, a wash, cut and blow dry, a wash, cut, style and blow dry, a standard blow dry and perms. If a set is what she has always had, ring me and we can talk about what I can do with her hair.
How much does it cost?
There is a £10 call-out charge on top of the service price, the same as for any home visit inside the usual area. It is built into the Home Visit version of each service on Fresha, so you see the full price before you confirm. Service prices depend on hair length and how long the appointment takes, and they all live on Fresha where they stay accurate.
Will you rush the appointment?
No. I would rather book a longer slot and leave early than have anybody feel hurried. If we need to stop for a cup of tea, a sit down or a breather halfway through, we stop. Say when you book if you think it will need extra time and I will plan for it.
Can you do regular appointments?
Yes, and that is how a lot of older clients like it: the same day, roughly the same time, every few weeks. I can book the next one before I leave so it is always in the diary, which saves a family member having to remember.
Do you visit care homes or sheltered housing?
Ask me. It depends on the place, what they allow, and whether there is a sink and a socket I can use, so I would rather talk it through with you than make a promise on a page. If your parent lives in sheltered housing or a retirement flat, ring me with the details.
My dad is living with dementia. Can you still do his hair?
Tell me about him when you book. I am a hairdresser, not a carer, and I will not pretend otherwise, but I can go slowly, explain what I am doing before I do it, keep it short if that is kinder, and stop if it is not working that day. Knowing the time of day he is at his best and whether it helps for you to be there makes a real difference.
Which areas do you cover?
Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, anywhere within roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Yelling. That takes in St Neots, Huntingdon, St Ives, Cambourne, Cambridge, Bedford, Sandy and Biggleswade, and the villages in between. If you are a little further out, ask.
Book a home visit for yourself or a parent.
