Brazilian blow dry and keratin treatment, at home.
Three months of less frizz and faster drying, plus Olaplex, Wella and Moroccanoil treatments for hair that needs repair or moisture. In the home salon in Yelling, or at your house anywhere across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
Hair that behaves, without stopping looking like yours.
Every summer the same message arrives: "Can you make my hair stop frizzing?" Cambridgeshire is damp in winter and humid in a heatwave, the water round here is hard, and hair that looks fine at eight in the morning has doubled in size by lunch. A Brazilian blow dry is the answer for a lot of those people, and it is the smoothing treatment I do most.
Frizz is not a flaw in your hair, it is physics. Each strand is covered in overlapping scales called the cuticle. When they lie flat, hair is smooth and shiny. When they lift, moisture from the air gets in, the strand swells and the hair puffs up. A keratin treatment fills and coats that cuticle so it lies flat and stays flat. Your hair dries faster, frizzes far less and sits sleeker, for around three months.
I trained at Vidal Sassoon and have been doing hair for twenty years, and the thing I have learned about treatments is that the right one depends on what is actually wrong. So this page covers the Brazilian blow dry and the three mask treatments on my treatments list, what each one does, who it suits, and when I will tell you that you do not need one at all.
Two to three hours, and the iron is the slow part.
- 01
Consultation and a stretch test
I check whether your hair is dry, damaged or both, and whether it is strong enough for the treatment, before anything is opened.
- 02
Wash and apply
The hair is washed clean, then the keratin smoothing product goes on section by section and is left to work.
- 03
Seal it in
The treatment is sealed in with a flat iron at a specific temperature, section by section. This is the slow part, and it is the part that makes it last.
- 04
Leave it alone
You go home with sleek hair and one rule: no washing, tying or clipping for 48 to 72 hours while it sets.
Allow two to three hours depending on your hair. A treatment on hair past your shoulder blades genuinely takes about twice as long as one on a bob, which is why the price on Fresha depends on length and thickness rather than being a single figure. Expect to leave with hair that feels lighter than when you arrived.
Wavy, frizzy, or forty minutes with a dryer every morning.
It suits you if your hair is wavy or frizzy, takes forever to blow dry, and what you really want is for it to behave. Waves relax rather than vanish, and curly hair becomes looser waves rather than poker straight. Most people prefer it that way.
It gives you time back. A client of mine used to spend forty minutes blow drying and straightening before work, five days a week. After a keratin treatment she rough dries it in ten and leaves. Your straighteners come out less, so the treatment is one dose of heat in exchange for far less of it every day.
It is safe on colour, and makes colour look glossier. If you are booking foils or balayage too, I do the colour first and the smoothing afterwards.
You may not need it if your hair is fine, already fairly straight and just a bit fluffy. A better cut, the right mask and being shown how to use your dryer will get you most of the way, and I would rather sell you that than a treatment you do not need.
Who should not book one.
Hair that is already snapping. Smoothing involves heat, and hair that is breaking now will break more. We repair first.
Anyone who bleached in the last few weeks. We wait, and we rebuild the hair before we smooth it. Olaplex belongs before a keratin treatment rather than after, so we are smoothing hair that is structurally sound.
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should talk to their midwife or GP before booking any chemical smoothing service. I am a hairdresser and that is not my call to make for you.
Anyone hoping it will fix damage. It hides damage beautifully for a while, which is exactly why it is tempting, but the hair underneath is unchanged. If the damage is the real problem, the answer is repair, not a coat of shine.
Anyone who wants very curly hair dead straight. That is permanent straightening, which is a different and far more serious process. It is not something to book blind. I would want to see and feel your hair, in person, before either of us decides anything. The longer explanation of the difference is in keratin and permanent straightening, explained.
If your hair is Afro, coily or textured and you are weighing smoothing against going natural, read the Afro and textured hair page first. Smoothing is a valid choice and I will do it properly, but it should be a choice rather than a default.
Repair, moisture, or both.
Dryness is not damage. Hair can be dry and structurally perfect, and giving it the wrong treatment makes it feel worse, not better.
The one people ask for by name.
Bleach breaks the bonds that hold a strand of hair together. So does permanent colour, daily heat, rough brushing when wet and a tight ponytail worn in the same place for years. Broken bonds are why hair feels like straw, snaps halfway down, and drops a blow dry by lunchtime. Most conditioners work on the outside of the strand. Olaplex works inside it and re-links those bonds.
In the chair I use it two ways. Number 1 is mixed into colour or lightener, so the bonds are being protected while the colour works. Number 2 goes on after the colour is rinsed, for ten to twenty minutes, and it is the part you can feel. Number 3 is the one you take home and use once a week on damp hair for at least ten minutes before you shampoo.
If your hair is uncoloured and in good condition, Olaplex will not do much for you and I will say so out loud. The test is simple: I stretch a wet strand. Healthy hair springs back. Damaged hair stays stretched or snaps. Dry but sound hair feels rough and still springs back, and that hair wants a Wella or Moroccanoil mask, not bond repair. There is more in what Olaplex actually does.
The first three days decide how long it lasts.
Wait. 48 to 72 hours before washing after a keratin treatment. Do not tie it up, do not tuck it hard behind your ears, do not clip it. Kinks set during this window, and they set for the life of the treatment.
Use a sulphate-free shampoo. This is not an upsell. It is the biggest single factor in how long the treatment lasts, because sulphates strip it out. I will tell you which shampoo, and there are perfectly good ones on the high street.
Wash less. Every wash costs you a little of it. Two or three times a week is plenty for most people once the frizz has gone.
Stay out of chlorine for the first week, and after that wet your hair with clean water before you swim so it absorbs less.
Book the next one before it has worn off. A treatment applied to hair that is still partly smooth lasts noticeably longer than one applied to hair that has gone all the way back. Around ten to twelve weeks is the sweet spot.
Same treatment, same time on the hair.
The full kit travels, so a keratin treatment or an Olaplex at your house is exactly the same service as in Yelling: the same products, the same professional iron and dryer, and the same time on the hair. I will need a sink or shower to rinse at, a chair near a plug socket, and a room with a window I can open. I will not do a smoothing treatment in a small closed bathroom, and on a home visit I will ask for a room with some air.
To book at home, choose the Home Visit version of the treatment on Fresha rather than the salon one. That is the listing that sends me to you and adds the £10 call-out charge, which covers the travel anywhere within roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Yelling. How home visits work across both counties is on the mobile hairdressing page.
Or come to me. The home salon is at 10 High Street, Yelling, PE19 6SD, just off the A428. It is about ten minutes from St Neots, around 16 minutes from St Ives, around 17 from Huntingdon and around 19 from Cambourne. There is somewhere to park and the kettle is on, which matters when you are sitting still for three hours.
A treatment a few days before a big event is ideal. Hair that has just had one blow dries beautifully, and it leaves time to fix anything unexpected. If you are not sure which treatment you need, send me a photo of your hair on a bad day rather than a good one, because that is the version I need to solve.
What clients said about their hair.

Nobody can do my hair as well as Biba, my hair is naturally very curly but I like it straight and I always end up feeling amazing when she does it for me. The pictures speak for themselves

Always so happy with the condition Biba leaves my hair in, and I'm so so happy with the colour.

Biba is amazing. She brought my hair to life, she blow dried it and styled it so well. Really happy with her and she gives honest advice. Can't wait to go back to her for a blow dry and style

None of these are tagged as a Brazilian blow dry, so I am not going to pretend they are. They are what clients said about how their hair looked and felt. All of them are on the reviews page.
What people ask before a treatment.
What is a Brazilian blow dry?
A keratin smoothing treatment. A keratin-based product goes onto clean hair, is left to work, then is sealed in with a flat iron. It does not permanently change the structure of your hair. It coats the cuticle so it lies flat, which means less frizz, faster drying and sleeker hair. Brazilian blow dry, keratin blow dry, keratin smoothing and keratin treatment are all broadly the same category.
How long does a keratin blow dry last?
Around three months, sometimes a little longer on hair that is not washed every day. It fades out gradually, with no regrowth line and no awkward stage. Booking the next one at around ten to twelve weeks, before it has completely gone, makes the next one last noticeably longer.
Will it make my hair poker straight?
No, and most people are glad of that. Waves relax rather than disappear, and curly hair becomes looser waves rather than dead straight. You still look like you, just on a day when everything went right. If you want very curly hair properly straight, that is a different and permanent process, and I would want to see and feel your hair before either of us commits to it.
Can I have it on coloured or highlighted hair?
Yes. It is safe on colour-treated hair and it makes colour look glossier. If you are having colour as well, I do the colour first and the smoothing treatment afterwards. If you bleached in the last few weeks, we wait and rebuild first.
Can you do a Brazilian blow dry at my house?
Yes. Book the Home Visit version on Fresha, which adds the £10 call-out charge, and I will come to you anywhere within roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Yelling. I need a sink or shower to rinse at, a chair near a plug socket, and a room with some air, because a smoothing treatment should never be done in a closed, cupboard-sized bathroom.
Is there formaldehyde in keratin treatments?
Some keratin formulas release small amounts of formaldehyde when heated, which is why the good ones are used in ventilated rooms and why the iron temperature matters. Formulas have improved a great deal and the ones I use are chosen with that in mind. In practice I open a window, and if you are sensitive to smells, tell me when you book and I will plan around it. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please check with your midwife or GP before booking any chemical smoothing service.
Do I need Olaplex or a hair mask?
It depends whether your hair is damaged or just dry, and they are not the same thing. Dry hair that is structurally sound wants moisture, which is a Wella or Moroccanoil mask. Hair whose bonds are broken, from bleach, colour or heat, wants Olaplex. I check with a thirty-second stretch test in the chair rather than guessing, and sometimes the honest answer is a better cut and a decent conditioner.
How long does the appointment take?
Allow two to three hours for a Brazilian blow dry, depending on how long and thick your hair is. A treatment on hair past your shoulder blades genuinely takes about twice as long as one on a bob. An Olaplex in the chair needs ten to twenty minutes on the hair after the colour is rinsed.
How much is a Brazilian blow dry?
Prices depend on hair length and thickness rather than a fixed rate, so they live on Fresha where they stay accurate. The salon and Home Visit versions are listed separately, so you can see the exact price before you book.
Want to know who is doing your hair first? You can read how I got here, or see the full services list, where the Brazilian blow dry sits under blow dries and the mask treatments have their own section.
