Why I am on this side of the county line

Bedford is not an outpost. It is a regular run.

If you search for a mobile hairdresser in Bedford you get a page of directory listings, most of them a name and a phone number with no face attached. I understand why that is frustrating. You are about to let somebody into your house for two or three hours and put bleach on your hair, and a line in a directory tells you nothing about whether they know what they are doing.

So here is the honest version. My name is Biba, I have been doing hair for twenty years, and I trained at Vidal Sassoon before working my way up to senior and director roles in salons. I run a small home salon in Yelling, just the other side of St Neots, and I have a mobile service that covers Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Bedford is not a favour I do for the occasional client. It is a part of my week.

The geography is the reason it works. From the end of my village the A428 runs down to St Neots, picks up the A421 at the Black Cat and goes straight into Bedford past Roxton and Great Barford. It is a dual carriageway almost the whole way, which means Bedford sits comfortably inside the area I cover and the villages strung along that road are on my way rather than a detour.

What you get is the appointment you would have had in a salon: the same Wella, Moroccanoil and Olaplex products, the same professional dryer and tongs, the same proper consultation before anybody touches your hair. What you do not get is the drive into town, the wait, or the walk back to the car having just been blow dried.

How it works

Four steps, and one of them is your postcode.

  1. 01

    Book the home visit

On Fresha, pick the Home Visit version of the service rather than the salon one. They are listed separately and the home visit is the one that sends me over the county line to you.

  2. 02

    Give me the postcode

Put your address in the booking notes. Bedford is a big town with a lot of similar street names, and knowing whether you are Kempston or Clapham changes how I plan the run.

  3. 03

    Kitchen sink, not a backwash

I do not carry a hydraulic chair or a portable basin. Your hair gets washed at your sink or in the bath, which works perfectly well and is worth saying before I arrive rather than after.

  4. 04

    Cut, colour, tidy, gone

The same appointment you would have had in a salon, with the same products, and I sweep up after myself. You never left the house.

The postcode one matters more in Bedford than people expect. The town has grown outwards in every direction and a street name on its own is not always enough to tell Kempston from Clapham. Thirty seconds in the booking notes means I arrive at the right door at the right time, which is the whole point of having somebody come to you.

Where I go

Bedford, and the villages on the road in.

  • Bedford town centre
  • Goldington
  • Putnoe
  • Brickhill
  • Queens Park
  • Castle Road
  • Kempston

Great Barford, Roxton, Blunham and Willington are barely a journey at all, because they sit on or just off the road I am already driving. The town itself, Kempston, Biddenham and Great Denham are all within the usual area, and so is the northern edge towards Clapham and Oakley. The rule everywhere is the same: anywhere within roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Yelling.

If you are south of Bedford towards Ampthill, or west towards Milton Keynes, ask before you assume the answer is no. Colour appointments and group bookings are worth the extra miles and I would far rather tell you honestly on the phone than have you not bother asking.

What travels

Everything except the plumbing.

The whole services list comes with me. Cuts for the whole family, blow dries and up-dos, half, three-quarter and full head foils, balayage, toners and colour refreshes, keratin and smoothing treatments, Olaplex and mask treatments, men’s perms and flow cuts. Brows, lashes, waxing and facials travel too, and plenty of clients stack those onto the same visit so they only have to be at home once.

The one thing that does not travel is a backwash. I do not carry a hydraulic chair or a portable basin, so your hair is washed at your sink or in your bath. I put that in writing on every page because I would rather you knew in advance than found out when I walked in. In practice it is a non issue. The kitchen sink is usually easiest, a shower over the bath is fine, and I bring the towels and the gown.

From you I need a chair near a plug socket, a bit of floor space and a sink I can rinse at. That is the entire list, and it has not changed in twenty years.

Two things about booking, because they are the ones that catch people out. Choose the Home Visit version of the service on Fresha rather than the salon one, since they are listed separately and the home visit is the one that sends me to you. And there is a £10 call-out charge on top of the service price, which is already built into that home visit listing and covers the travel anywhere inside the usual area. Being in Bedfordshire rather than Cambridgeshire does not add anything to it.

If you are having colour with me for the first time, the skin test is not optional and it has to be at least 48 hours before the appointment. I can post it to you, it takes about a minute to do, but it has to happen before the day rather than on it. Colour cannot go ahead without one and I will not bend that for anybody, including people who have had colour elsewhere for years.

On timings I will give you an honest figure when you book rather than a hopeful one. A wash, cut and blow dry is about an hour. Foils are two to three hours depending on how much hair you have. Knowing that in advance is half the reason people switch to a home visit, because you can put the washing on, keep half an eye on a toddler or take a call in the middle of it without anybody minding.

Who books it

The people for whom getting to a salon is the hard part.

Parents, first and foremost, and particularly parents of small children who have worked out that an hour at the kitchen table is achievable and a trip into town with a pushchair is not. Children's cuts are far easier at home in any case. A child who is frightened of a salon is usually fine in their own front room with their own toys on the floor.

Then older clients, and anybody whose mobility makes a trip into Bedford hard work. That is a large part of why I do this at all, and it is worth saying plainly: if somebody you look after would be calmer having their hair done in their own chair, tell me when you book and I will give the appointment the time it needs. Shift workers and commuters too, who want an evening slot rather than a Saturday morning spent queueing.

And groups. Weddings, proms, birthdays, mothers and daughters booked back to back in one house, which is one of my favourite ways to spend a morning. One trip over the county line, several appointments, nobody has to drive anywhere.

If you are weighing a home visit against a salon, I have written honestly about what a mobile hairdresser actually costs and why clients make the switch, and there is a walk through of exactly what happens on a first home visit.

  • I've been a client of Biba for a number of years. She always listens to what you would like and gives great advice on what can be achieved, she has such a cheerful personality, I feel very at ease with her, I consider her a friend & trust that my hair will look great - she's never let me down!

  • Biba has been doing my hair for over 10 years along with my sister, sister-in-law, niece and daughters. We have always been extremely pleased with Biba's cuts, colours, and blow drys. We all highly recommend her.

Hazel Slaymaker · Google, November 2025

All of them, from Google, Facebook and Fresha, are on the reviews page. None of these are tagged by town, so I am not going to pretend they are Bedford clients. They are the ones who have stayed, which is the thing I would want to know if I were booking somebody new.

Or come to me

Yelling is closer to Bedford than it looks on a map.

If you would rather have the salon experience, the home salon is at 10 High Street, Yelling, PE19 6SD. It is five minutes off the A428 and a straight run up the A421 from Bedford, and there is somewhere to park, which tends to be the part that appeals. The kettle is always on. You can read how I got here if you would like to know who is doing your hair before you commit.

A lot of my Bedfordshire clients do a bit of both: a home visit when the week is full, a trip out to Yelling when they fancy the hour to themselves. Either way it is the same hands and the same products, and both versions are on Fresha, listed separately so you can see what each one costs before you book.

The wider picture of how the mobile service works across both counties is on the mobile hairdressing page, and if you are the other side of the patch there is a page on home visits in Cambridge. If you have a question this page has not answered, send it over and I will answer it myself rather than passing you to anybody else.

Questions

What Bedford clients ask first.

Do you really come out to Bedford?

Yes. Bedford and Bedfordshire have been part of the mobile round for years, not an exception I make occasionally. The home salon is in Yelling, the A428 drops me onto the A421 at the Black Cat and that runs straight into Bedford past Roxton and Great Barford. It sits comfortably inside roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Yelling.

Which parts of Bedford and Bedfordshire do you cover?

The town itself and the villages around it: Goldington, Putnoe, Brickhill, Queens Park, Castle Road, Kempston, Great Denham, Biddenham, Bromham, Clapham, Oakley, Renhold, Great Barford, Roxton, Blunham, Willington, Cople, Cardington, Elstow, Wixams, Sandy and Biggleswade. If you are further out, towards Milton Keynes or Luton, ask before you book rather than after and I will give you an honest answer instead of a maybe.

Is it more expensive because I am in another county?

No. It is £10 on top of the service price, the same call-out as everywhere else inside the usual area, and it is already built into the Home Visit version of the service on Fresha. There is no Bedfordshire surcharge and nothing extra to pay on the day.

Where do you wash my hair?

At your sink or in your bath. I do not bring a portable backwash or a hydraulic chair. In practice the kitchen sink is usually easiest, a shower over the bath is fine, and I bring the towels and the gown.

Can you do colour at my house in Bedford?

Yes. Foils, balayage, toners and colour refreshes all travel, and colour is a good part of what I do out that way. If it is your first colour with me you will need a skin test at least 48 hours beforehand, which has to happen before the appointment rather than on the day.

What do you need from me?

A chair near a plug socket, a bit of floor space and a sink I can rinse at. That is the whole list, and it is the same in a Putnoe semi, a Great Denham new build or a cottage in Bromham.

Do you come out to older or housebound clients?

Often, and it is a large part of why I do this work at all. If getting into a salon is hard going, or somebody you look after would be calmer having their hair done in their own chair, say so when you book and I will give the appointment the time it needs rather than rushing it.

Can you come in the evening or on a Saturday?

Yes. Evenings and Saturdays are a normal part of my week rather than a favour, which is rather the point if you work in Bedford or commute out of it. Those slots go first, so it is worth booking the next one before I leave.

How much do you charge?

Prices depend on hair length, thickness and how long the appointment actually takes, so they live on Fresha where they stay accurate rather than on a page I might forget to update. I have also written about what a mobile hairdresser costs and how the service price and the call-out fit together.

Can a few of us book together?

Yes, and it is one of my favourite ways to work. Weddings, proms, birthdays, mothers and daughters booked back to back in one house. One trip over, several appointments, and everybody stays put. Ask about it rather than booking blind so I can block the time properly.
